In my leadership roles at Albertsons Digital and Walmart Labs, I’ve seen firsthand how empowering teams to embrace creativity can transform a project from ordinary to groundbreaking. For example, during the development of a new platform at Walmart Labs, we encountered a significant roadblock that conventional thinking couldn’t solve. Instead of doubling down on the same approaches, I encouraged the team to adopt a ‘what if?’ mentality. No idea was off-limits, and this freedom allowed us to discover a solution that not only resolved the issue but we also discovered a new revenue stream!

To inspire creativity in your team, you need to create a culture where innovation thrives. Here are some steps I’ve taken to foster that environment:

1. Encourage Open Communication
Open communication is the foundation of creativity. I always ensure that my team feels comfortable sharing ideas, even if those ideas are unconventional. During brainstorming sessions, I remind everyone that no idea is too small, too big, or too ‘out there’—sometimes, the wildest ideas spark the most creative solutions.

2. Embrace Failure as a Learning Tool
Fear of failure can stifle creativity faster than anything else. As a leader, it’s essential to show your team that failure is part of the process, not something to be avoided. I make it a point to highlight lessons learned from failed experiments and celebrate the risks taken in pursuit of innovation. 3. Create an award for killing a product
Fear of killing your product that you have worked so hard and long on has multiple facets. Many team members feel like they will be killed right along with the project they kill so they keep it alive as long as possible. By making it something to be proud of and awarded it removes a crucial boundary necessary for team success and growth

4. Empower Cross-Functional Collaboration
Creativity doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Some of the most innovative ideas come from the intersection of different perspectives. I’ve found that encouraging cross-functional collaboration—between product, engineering, marketing, and customer insights—often leads to unexpected breakthroughs. When teams with diverse expertise collaborate, they approach problems from different angles, leading to more creative and holistic solutions.

5. Create Space for Reflection and Inspiration
Innovation isn’t something that can be forced. Sometimes, the best ideas come when you step away from the task at hand. I encourage my team to take time for reflection, whether that’s through dedicated ‘creative thinking’ hours or informal team retreats. Providing space for inspiration is crucial to keeping the creative juices flowing.

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of leading teams that consistently push the envelope in product development. One particular instance stands out to me—our team at Albertsons was tasked with optimizing an online grocery ordering system. The goal was clear, but traditional solutions weren’t delivering the desired results.

Instead of sticking to the script, I initiated a ‘blue-sky thinking’ session, where the team was free to suggest anything, no matter how far-fetched. This exercise led to the idea of integrating AI-driven recommendation systems to enhance the customer experience, an approach we hadn’t considered before. It not only met our project goals but exceeded customer expectations, becoming one of the platform’s most popular features.
